Research links diet and acne

Research indicates that acne vulgaris, an epidemic inflammatory skin disease typically occurring during adolescence, is closely associated with Western diet. Three major food categories that exacerbate acne include:

  • High-glycemic carbohydrates
  • Milk and dairy products of certain types and quality
  • Polyunsaturated fatty acids from vegetable oils
  • Trans fats in combination with insufficient intake of omega-3 fatty acids.

Deviation in sebum quantity (hyperseborrhea) and composition (dysseborrhea) promotes the overgrowth of the bacterium Propionibacterium acnes and biofilm formation, increasing the risk of acne. Diet plays a significant role in these deviations. A paleo-like diet enriched with vegetables [note: not all types] and fish supports nutritional therapy for acne vulgaris. The diet recommended in the Acne Clear program has been proven effective over many years in permanently eliminating acne and pimples.
